Democracy for the National Park
THE NORTHERN FARMERS AND LANDOWNERS GROUP WELCOMES DEMOCRACY TO NORTHUMBERLAND NATIONAL PARK
The announcement in the Queen’s Speech that some members of the National Park Authorities are to be directly elected by the Park residents has been welcomed by the Northern Farmers and Landowners Group (NFLG).
Angus Collingwood-Cameron, Lead Consultant for NFLG, said “It has always struck me as perverse that the 2000 residents of the Northumberland National Park are administered by a body that is located outside the Park, and that is largely made up of County Councillors from wards that have little relation to the Park. The residents have been effectively excluded from the local democratic process, which has been very unsatisfactory.”
“The news that this situation is to be rectified is most welcome. It should mean that the Park residents finally have a proper say in matters that directly affect their livelihoods.”
